Food Rescue Helps Build Bus Route Program for Hungry Students

These times can be trying for many, but especially for those children who rely on daily school lunch and breakfast as potentially their only meals of the day.

This sad truth is almost too difficult to bear, and that is why Pittsburgh-based 412 Food Rescue is determined to help.

It embarked on a mission to help local children who typically rely on their school lunch to eat during the day. Since many schools are closed for the rest of the year, the organization – along with nonprofits A+ Schools and the Latino Community Center – developed a bus route that delivers school lunch to students directly. The program’s launch was primarily funded by Pittsburgh native and widely known actor Michael Keaton.

While this idea is nothing new, many school districts across the country are only offering lunches for pick up, which presents a problem for those families who do not have access to transportation.

Therefore, a new innovative idea was born, if the kids can’t come to their lunches, 412 Food Rescue would take the lunches to the kids.

Three local restaurants — The Vandal, Botanico, and DiAnoia’s Eatery — provided the meals and Etna Print Circus loaned their bus so a total of 500 meals could be provided to students across six bus stops.

This is not the first time 412 Food Rescue has been on our radar. In fact, just last month the 10k Sandwiches partnered with 412 Food Rescue to help feed children and families in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.
